Space for Cycling: Magical Leeds at Christmas! Saturday 6th December

Join us for a Magical Space for Cycling experience in Leeds this Christmas!

Following on from the superbly successful Space for Cycling campaign ride in May, Leeds Cycling Campaign is back to show that there are plenty of people who want to ride their bikes! Bling up your steed with Christmas sparkle, dig out that Santa hat, bring your friends and family to experience Magical Leeds at Christmas!

Meeting point and route:

We are meeting at 12pm in Victoria Gardens (by the main City Library / Art Gallery) and will follow a family-friendly circuit of the city centre - possibly 2 laps, if the weather's fine and everyone's enjoying it! Feeder rides will be arranged from various meeting points, check below for more details or contact us if you'd like to lead a feeder ride.

What to wear:

We’re encouraging everyone to dress fun and festive: Santa hats, Christmas jumpers, and of course plenty of tinsel and sparkle for the bikes! Remember to bring a shower-proof jacket and plenty of warm layers to put on when we stop.

Bling up your Bike!

We’ll provide “Space for Cycling” bike placards but you can add ribbons, plastic flowers, spokey dokeys or anything else you can attach. Just make sure your bike still works properly and there’s no risk of anything getting tangled up! Electrical tape is good for attaching things, as it won't harm your paintwork.

You can come along on any type of bike, but please check that it works properly before you set out (tyres, brakes, chain, gears, steering, saddle). You may also want to bring a spare tube or a puncture repair kit and pump, though there will be experienced marshals around to help with any mechanical problems. If you haven’t cycled in a group before, you can read our short rides guide here http://bit.ly/LCCeasy for some tips.

Food, drink and amenities:

Feel free to bring a drink and snacks for during the ride. There are toilets at Leeds Railway Station and the LIGHT shopping centre close to Millennium square – both of these charge a small fee (around 40p).

Feeder Rides: Groups will be riding into the city centre together from the following locations. You can also view the feeder rides on a map.

Easy Riders will be meeting as usual at 10.15 for a 10.30 depart from Roundhay Park car park, and will finish in the city centre in time for the Space4Cycling ride. Steve will be on hand to lead the Easy Riders back to Roundhay afterwards.

Yeadon / Rawson: Andy will be leading a feeder ride from Sainsbury's off the A65 Rawdon by JCT600 roundabout, setting off 11am down Kirkstall Road.

Middleton: Lizzie will be riding in from Middleton Park visitors' centre, meeting at 11am and following the Middleton - City Centre core cycle network route. We'll be passing the Royal Armouries around 11.25am.

Pudsey: Martin is going to be leading a ride from Pudsey cenotaph, leaving at 11am.

Roundhay via Chapel Allerton and Chapeltown: Jon will lead a ride from the Easy Riders meeting point at Roundhay Park (the main car park opposite the tennis courts) meeting at 11am, and going via Chapel Allerton (meet outside Nat West opposite Lidl at 11.25am).

Kirkstall: Tor will be leading a ride from Kirkstall Leisure Centre, leaving at 11.30

Headingley: Mike will be leading a group from St Chad's church in Headingley, meeting at 11.15 to depart at 11.30.

Alwoodley / Moor Allerton: Frank will be riding in from Sainsburys Moor Allerton, meeting at 11am and taking the off-road route via Meanwood.

Returning home:

The event formally ends in the city centre with the presentation of a Christmas card to Leeds City Council with a space 4 cycling message - there was no room at the inn and there still isn't space 4 cycling! This will be followed  a cycling cashmob! Bring your Christmas shopping money into Leeds, and we'll show how important the cycling pound could be to the local economy.

Who can attend?

Any adult (16+) can attend, and children can take part if they are competent cyclists and are accompanied by an adult. You are responsible for the children you’re accompanying!
